Here are the most FAQ’s about seeing a Chiropractor. If you have any other questions, please fill in the form below or contact us to make an appointment.
Your chiropractor will first engage in an accurate history taking as he begins to isolate differential diagnoses. He will then proceed with the physical examination of the relevant bodily systems. This would include all orthopedic/neurological testing valid to the patients symptoms and condition – reaching a diagnosis.
Any special investigations, such as x-rays will be advised at this point if necessary.
The diagnosis and treatment approach will always be explained to the patient in detail.
At this point the treatment procedure will commence consisting of manipulation/mobilization of dysfunctional bodily joints, muscle release techniques, rehabilitation exercises, postural and home advice.

Everyone should see a chiropractor! By analyzing the movement patterns of the body (especially the spine) dysfunction can be detected and corrected long before it becomes symptomatic or degenerative. Prevention is better than cure!

It is a common misperception that Chiropractors treat only the spine. Chiropractors specialize in the treatment of all bodily joints and related pain syndromes, as all joints react and degenerate similarly when dysfunctional. The most commonly treated problems at our clinic include:
- Mechanical back and neck pain
- Nerve impingements in the back and neck, radiating into the legs or arms
- Spinal disc prolapses (slipped discs)
- Headaches, tension headaches and migraine
- Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) of the jaw
- Myofascial pain and dysfunction syndromes of all muscles.
- Sport related or overuse injuries such as impingement syndrome of the shoulder, tennis/golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ilio-tibial band friction syndrome of the knee, achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis etc.
- Infantile reflux, colic, constipation etc.

The amount of treatment necessary will vary from person to person depending on age, chronicity of the problem etc. As a rule of thumb always come as soon the problem starts! We advise a quarterly preventative treatment protocol to maintain optimal bodily movement patterns.

The manipulation in itself is a painless procedure. One has to however bear in mind that when a joint is already inflamed there will naturally be a degree of tenderness when handling the area.

This is the opening up of the blocked or restricted joint as to regain normal motion. The sound is literally the collapse of the negative pressure gas bubble in the joint cavity.

Absolutely! Please bear in mind that any joint can click and that manipulation loosens joints. Manipulation must therefore be very specifically applied to ONLY the restricted or fixated joint in the direction of the blockage. Only Chiropractors are trained to this objective. Unskilled on non-specific manipulation will result in excessive movement or hyper-mobility leading to arthritis.

The difference is, at best, the approach to very similar conditions. We work closely with physiotherapists and biokineticists and often the patient will gain from a multi-disciplinary approach. Chiropractors do however specialize in joint manipulation which is often the quickest and most effective modality in correcting joint dysfunction.

By all means try massage to relieve stressed or painful muscles, there are many health benefits to massage. If however this does not SOLVE your problem or the symptoms keep recurring then there is clearly something CAUSING your problem.
As explained previously joint dysfunction causes muscle atrophy and spasm (muscles attach into the joints) so until the joint dysfunction is corrected your problem will logically keep relapsing. TREAT THE CAUSE NOT THE SYMPTOM.

As rare as it may be some patients do complain of stiffness for a day following a chiropractic treatment – at which point they then begin to feel much better. This post treatment stiffness may be as result of the affected joint or body part starting to move properly for the first time thus recruiting muscles which have not been working up to that point. That area is effectively going to gym for the first time-hence the stiffness.

At our clinic we start seeing infants from 4 weeks old. There are authors who recommend treatment even younger than that but four weeks has allowed enough time to establish the necessary reflexes etc to be active and in place. I recommend that all children follow at least a 6 monthly maintenance protocol with the chiropractor to check for normal growth patterns and developmental issues such as scoliosis etc going forward. Children with diagnosed problems in place may need treatment way more regularly.

As in adults, babies also develop spinal disturbances or dysfunction. These can be developmental, due to the birth process, or due to unintentional incorrect handling of the child etc. Where there is dysfunction or blockage in a joints movement that respective nerve will not be getting its normal stimulation.
This will result in an unhealthy signal traveling through that nerve to the relevant body part (via reflex mechanisms) resulting in an unhealthy body part. This is why many infantile conditions seem to be as result of a slow or impeded nerve signal such as in colic, constipation, reflux etc.
Please note that the treatment is in no way painful for the child. Gentle mobilization/massage of the joints is applied as opposed to full manipulation in adults.
